BLOG 4 - Brazil to Glasgow

Eric Torres - International Exchange

12-12-15

Hello,

I’m Eric, a member of the Capacicars team. I am originally from Brazil and I’m currently taking part in an international exchange program between the Instituto Militar de Engenharia and the University of Strathclyde.

I was thrilled to be part of the CapaciCar project as I felt it could make a great difference, not only in my personal development, but also in the development of new technologies. It is known that road transport vehicles are the third biggest emitter of greenhouse gases in the UK, estimated at over 20% of the total emissions. Gases which are extremely closely related to respiratory diseases and lung cancer in dense population centres. Therefore, there is a need for new Low/Zero Emissions Vehicles (LZEV) to help combat these issues. Our teams goal is to manufacture, design and test a 1/10th scale vehicle powered by Ultra-capacitors - an exciting and growing technology hoping to replace batteries int he future. This is a completely new concept for eco-friendly cars, and it has been amazing to help realise the concept, even just in the design stages.

As a member of the group, I can say it has been a wonderful experience. I’ve learned so much in the couple months I have spent working on the project, especially in the field of project management. The team is very united and dedicated, key elements of an effective team, and it has been a pleasure to be part of it.

With regard to Glasgow, I have never been to a place apart from Brazil with such welcoming people!  However, my time on exhange is coming to an end and I will be returning to Brazil shortly but I will carry with me all the things I have learned and the memories of the people I have met.

Everyone says that the success of an exchange program is is a representation of the city you are going to live in and the university where you'll study. I can say without a doubt that I`ve chosen well in both repsects and if you ask me if I wanted to do an exchange again, I would choose the same country and the same university!

Good luck to the CapaciCars team as they continue with the project next semester!
