Chassis: Initial Concepts

29-10-15

This week marks the start of our more detailed design phase for the chasis. Our team of eager designers brought the drawing boards out and got to work on designing the innovative chassis for the Capacicar. Various forms of chassis design have been investigated and strengths and weaknesses noted to determine the best choice for our design. A concurrent style design approach is currently being utilised with the manufacturing team beginning to consider the possible production techniques whilst the designers continue on chassis design. Another significant milestone achieved this week was a confirmation of the 1/10th scaling of the dimensions and 1/100th scaling for the vehicle weight.

Research has also began on a novel steering system to understand how this would coincide with the chassis design and it can be effectively integrated.

We are also currently investigating material choice for the vehicle - which material will meet our requirements such as weight, cost and manufacturability. We are also investigating the use of additive manufactuing/3D Printing for the connecting innovative nodes at the centre of the chassis. This would help deliver the flexibility and ease of manufacture that we desire.

CAD software has been heavily utilised to give a visual representation of the concepts. This helps finalise the concepts before structural analysis can be carried out to verify initial calculations on the chassis strength.

More updates to come in the next coming weeks!

NEXT STEPS...

  • Finalisation of chassis design

  • Structural analysis

  • Materials Cost Evaluation
